Unlike Mars, we've actually been there, and there's a huge new trove of photos from the Apollo space missions to prove it. The images themselves aren't new, but they were shared en masse recently on the Project Apollo Archive Flickr account. The archive is Washington: NASA has released stunning images of real regions including Acidalia Planitia on Mars, a location associated with the best-selling novel and Hollywood movie, 'The Martian'. The region Acidalia Planitia is featured as the landing site for the MIAMI (WSVN) -- NASA has released new images of the red planet which show ancient lake beds. The photos come three years after the landing of the Curiosity Rover. NASA scientist believe that the images are those of what may have been a water basin. In a document titled "NASA's Journey to Mars: Pioneering Next Steps in Space Exploration," the expedition is broken down into three separate phases, painting a picture of the incremental scientific advances needed to land humans on the Martian surface. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has provided stunning images of the planet’s surface, depicting landing sites from the film and volcano-like mounds A photo from Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows the Acidalia Planitia region of Mars depicted in “This is used to collect sand from Mars,” said one of the students. “Its other function is that of taking and sending pictures of Mars.” The model had been made in just five weeks. Three billion years ago, however, the situation may have been much different. In 2012 the Mars Curiosity rover beamed images back to Earth containing some of the most concrete evidence that water once flowed in abundance on the planet. Small, remarkably Pasadena, CA – Images from a NASA Mars orbiter’s telescopic camera reveal details of real regions on Mars where a new Hollywood movie, “The Martian,” places future astronaut adventures. The novel of the same name used actual locations on Mars for The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter often takes images of Martian sand dunes to study the mobile soils. These images provide information about erosion and movement of surface material Curiosity sends images from Mars showing pebbles that have been transported by a riverNasa/Reuters Following on from Nasa's recent announcement that there is flowing water on Mars, the Curiosity rover has revealed that rounded pebbles on the Red Planet had .
